With over 3000 members, the Intensive Care Society is the largest multi-professional critical care professional network in the UK. Membership offers you the chance to become part of an International network of Intensive Care Professionals.

We are dedicated to supporting our members across the many professions within critical care. Learn more about some of the ways we do below...

How do we add value to you?

  • We are your voice: delivering what members are saying, turning your collective voice change to raise the profile of critical care.
  • The Society is your space to network, share thoughts, exchange ideas and collaborate with over 3000 like-minded professionals across growing platforms and avenues from events, to digital and social media, through to public policy. We actively engage in consultations with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, Department of Health and others.
  • Learning is tailored around the subjects our members have asked us to deliver and is currently taking place online. In 2021 we will be launching a Learning Portal for members.
  • Accreditation in FUSICA leading accreditation programme for critical care focused ultrasound in the UK. Our FUSIC accreditation modules in Heart, Lung, Abdominal and DVT allows you to design your own learning pathway. Members receive a discount.
  • State of the Art Conference: #ICSSOA is the largest critical care conference in UK and biggest multi-professional meeting in Europe. Each year over 100 speakers will present across five different work streams, with an abundance of opportunities to present your work and the opportunity to network with the breadth of the speciality from around the world. Members receive a discount.
  • A wellbeing Hub : This wellbeing hub therefore examines wellbeing from all angles- individual, team, and system where you can access wellbeing resources for staff , for managers and teams ; or Access psychological support . Go a step further and get support to develop ICU psychology services , or join our peer support programme. In 2021 take part in short psychoeducational courses .
  • Transfer Insurance: Members have to look after the sickest of patients and this sometimes means inter hospital transfers. So to make sure you are covered, members have personal accident insurance up to £1,000,000 in the event of an accident in transit during transfer of a patient as part of your membership. Make sure you also check our updated guidance on the Transfer of the Critically Ill Adult.
  • Divisions and groups to support the profession. From the Standards and Guidelines Committee which carries out important work in developing and publishing evidence based standards and guidelines. These have included writing national Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care (GPICS) and the AHP critical care professional development framework in collaboration with other organisations, amongst many others.  Professional Affairs Groups representing the multi-professional intensive care community represent the voice and views of the professions to our Legal and Ethical Advisory Group develops guidance and policies to support members. This will ensure that we can tackle important pieces of work and difficult subjects in the right in order to make informed decisions on how to better shape critical care for the better. Read our Trustees Annual Report to learn more.
  • Research awards & grants: We award grants pump-priming ICU research and have awarded hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years. The Society’s research award winners have gone on to attain millions of additional NIHR portfolio funding supported by our role as the voice of the critical care community.
  • Journal of Intensive Care SocietyThe journal publishes original papers, review articles, critically appraised topics and audits of interest to all those involved in caring for critically ill patients. Members receive a quarterly copy of JICS.

  • We collaborate and front projects such as the National Audit for Critical Care. We collaborate with other like-minded organisations to help develop critical care and open up opportunities from these relationships. For instance, we are collaborating with Network for Improving Critical Care Systems and Training (NICST) who offer opportunities for UK trained health professionals to undertake international placements as part of their work to support capacity building.
  • We deliver projects to better connect the critical care community such as the soon-to-launch Local Ambassadors in ICUs. This work will see an Intensive Care Society point of contact in each unit or at least across the trust, giving our members easier access to the Society as well as helping us communicate with you all better. We can never have too many ambassadors, so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to be one of them.

  • We also run campaigns on behalf of members to deliver members messages and enable us to do even more of what members have asked from us. 2020 is our 50th birthday and will be our biggest campaign to date! This will fund activities such as research and tackling problems that patients and staff experience as a result of intensive care through 'humanising ICU'.
