Mentoring opportunities at SOA
Mentoring at SOA25
Following the successful introduction of mentoring sessions at SOA24, we are delighted to be running another series at this year’s Congress – slots are limited so get in early to secure yours!
Led by Sara Scott (Consultant ICM & Anaesthesia), a team of trained mentors will be available to offer support and guidance in free sessions of up to one hour.
What? Mentoring is essentially taking time to have a supported conversation with a trained mentor, to allow the mentee to take control of their personal development. The mentor will help the mentee look at the chosen issue through a wider lens to identify how they can help themselves to develop an action plan to move forwards, as well as identifying potential blind spots and pitfalls to navigate. Mentoring is not about being given advice or being told what to do. Rather, it is the opportunity to explore a situation while receiving guidance from a qualified mentor. There are some similarities with coaching, but it is a separate process.
When? Throughout the first two days of SOA: six slots will be available at 13.30 and 15.30 on Tuesday 1st July and at 09.30, 11.30 and 14.00 on Wednesday 2nd.
Where? Away from the main exhibition area, a quieter and more private location within the ICC.
Why? If you like the sound of it but are still hesitant, this is the perfect opportunity to explore further in a free session to see how it can be of use and help in future.
Who? The team of 6 mentors will be made up of both locally based mentors, in addition to members of the North East Mentoring Organisation.
Who 2? Mentoring is open for all members of the multi-professional team and is for anyone who would like the opportunity to explore a current opportunity or challenge. It is a common misconception that mentoring is only for those struggling, although of course it can definitely play a very useful role during difficult times.
How? To book a slot in advance, email Sara Scott at sara.scott4@nhs.net. Alternatively, you can wait till you get to SOA and book a session at the main registration desk with one of the ICS team. Sign-up sheets will be available from 08.00 on Tuesday 1 July.
Further information
The best way to really find out how mentoring may benefit you is to book a session!
There is also a BJA Education article which you can read to gain more understanding of this process. Although aimed at doctors, we stress that mentoring is for any member of the team, regardless of role or rank.
