Christine Newmarch
Christine is an experienced senior nurse with 24 years of service in critical care, including 14 years in senior leadership roles. Her intensive care nursing career began in Cardiothoracic surgical ICU, and she has since developed extensive experience in caring for patients with complex conditions and critical illness following a valuable career transition into general intensive care. Her expertise encompasses clinical leadership, governance, policy development and service improvement at University Hospitals Liverpool Group (Royal site).
Christine’s contribution to critical care nursing publications and professional guidance began early in her career. In January 2004, her first article on Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and prone positioning was published. Following an invitation from the editor to develop further professional content, she authored a two-part continuing professional development (CPD) series on mechanical ventilation in 2006, helping to develop nurses’ knowledge and understanding of this complex area of critical care practice.
Alongside her published work, Christine has made a significant contribution to the development of local critical care nursing guidance and policy. She leads the nurse guidelines and policy team, overseeing the development, implementation and review of evidence-based guidance to support safe, consistent and effective patient care. This included being involved in a collaborative merger project with colleagues at Aintree Hospital. She was also privileged to contribute to the Intensive Care Society’s national prone positioning guidance, with the nursing section providing valuable support to clinical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Christine is currently collaborating to update the guidance.
These experiences reflect and demonstrate Christine’s longstanding commitment to sharing clinical knowledge, translating evidence into practice and supporting nurses caring for critically ill patients. They have also strengthened her interest in ensuring that nurses’ expertise and perspectives are represented in the development of national guidance, professional standards and priorities. Christine brings leadership experience in workforce management, recruitment, staff development, risk management, incident investigation and quality improvement.
Christine brings a wealth of clinical expertise, experience in national guidance development and a strong commitment to collaborative working to the Nurse Professional Advisory Group. She is committed to ensuring that nurses’ perspectives inform national guidance, professional standards and priorities, and that evidence, professional expertise and shared learning translate into meaningful improvements for patients and staff.
Outside work, Christine values spending time with family and friends. Balancing a rewarding career with raising children has strengthened her resilience, adaptability and ability to manage competing priorities, while maintaining a logical, positive and practical approach.
