This Study Day aims to provide quick updates on both the general principles of looking after surgical patients within the intensive care environment, and also refreshers from some of the key surgical specialties.
The surgical specialties are proudly dynamic and fast-paced, which can make it challenging to keep up to date with what our surgical colleagues are doing. Whether our patients present electively or emergently, an understanding of surgery and surgical complications is essential for modern critical care.
Whether you were last in theatres/on a surgical ward last week or last decade, come along to hear from experts in their field about the key things to look out for in their post-op patients, and the updates in their specialty.
This course is designed for healthcare professionals working in or alongside Intensive Care Units, including doctors, nurses, physiologists, pharmacists and allied health professionals.
This study day aims to provide quick updates on both the general principles of looking after surgical patients within the intensive care environment, and also refreshers from some of the key surgical specialties.

Critical Care Pharmacist, Victoria Hospital
Alan has had an interest in IV therapy and related safety issues since undergraduate studies, and past experience has included a period in industry running a compounding unit. In recent years he has focussed on IV fluids and IV stewardship, including publications on implementation of the NICE Fluids guideline, and on consensus recommendations for setting up stewardship systems, and now works with the International Fluid Academy and with Turning the Tide, a UK group committed to improving the use of IV fluids. Linked to this is a particular interest in how drugs are handled in the body, including the impact of fluid shifts. He has been keen to try novel ways of administering drugs and new formulations, and believes that it is important to consider safety over the cost of those new formulations. Accredited at consultant level in Critical Care, Alan has provided leadership in critical care pharmacy, including pushing the development of accreditation in the specialty. Please accept {{cookieConsents}} cookies to view this content
