Spotlight on excellence: the Rising Star journey

With the SOA26 abstract deadline looming, we are looking back at the stories that define the Intensive Care Society’s Congress. One such story belongs to Andrew Boyle, our 2025 Rising Star winner. For Andrew, the path to the winner’s podium was the result of a decade of clinical and academic rigour.

The research: a ten-year perspective

While some abstracts focus on a single trial or a recent data set, Andrew used the Rising Star platform to present a broader narrative.

"My abstract was a summary of research that I'd undertaken over 10 years, including during my PhD and as an Academic Clinical Lecturer. The Rising Star competition offered me an opportunity to discuss my work in a longer format whilst also competing for the prestigious Rising Star award."

Andrew is a long-term member of the ICS community, and his decision to submit was rooted in a deep appreciation for the atmosphere of State of the Art (SOA) itself.

"I have attended SOA on several occasions and have presented abstracts before. It's a friendly and welcoming meeting that provides a great opportunity for people to showcase their work. Presenting at SOA, both in the Rising Star session and during abstract sessions in past years, has always provided a great opportunity to meet new colleagues and friends, and to receive feedback and suggestions for my work. Together, these aspects have often brought new opportunities to develop my career."

Realising a career ambition

The Rising Star session is often cited as a highlight of the SOA programme. For those pursuing the clinical academic route, it represents a significant milestone in professional recognition.

The Rising Star award is one of the most prestigious awards in UK critical care.

"As someone who has pursued a career as a clinical academic, it was always an ambition to present in this session. Given the calibre of past winners, my success in 2025 was a very proud and happy moment for me and I remain grateful to the ICS for this award. It was also a little embarrassing having to stand on stage during the final plenary!"

Pride, motivation, and validation

The award served as a vital nod from peers, that this decade of work was moving the needle in critical care.

"Having followed the Rising Star over the years and knowing the calibre and dedication to their work of past winners, I was very proud to be able to stand alongside them as a Rising Star winner. It also validated the work I've done over the years and gave me an extra motivation to pursue this career path. Given the prestige of the award and the calibre of past winners, I am both grateful and proud to have won the Rising Star for the many years of work for which it was awarded."

Advice for the SOA26 Applicants

As we enter the final few days of the SOA26 abstract submission window, Andrew’s message to those still refining their work is clear:

"If you're thinking about it, go for it! It's a really great opportunity to present a large body of work and gives you more time to discuss it in detail and explain the inevitable nuances of it. It's also a great platform that the ICS provide for early career investigators, and I would highly recommend submitting your work!"
