Maternal Critical Care: It Takes a Team

Join us for a Maternal Critical Care Study Day, co-organised with the UK Maternal Cardiology Society.

This multidisciplinary study day explores the recognition and management of the critically unwell pregnant and postpartum patient across the entire care pathway. Bringing together experts from pre-hospital care, maternity services, and intensive care, the programme focuses on early identification of deterioration, safe transfer, and evidence-based management of common maternal emergencies.

Emphasis is placed on teamwork and the application of contemporary national reports, guidelines and initiatives that help support timely escalation and improve maternal outcomes.

Learning Objectives Learning Objectives

By the end of this study day, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and interpret early indicators of maternal deterioration, utilising structured assessment tools (e.g. MEWS) to support timely escalation and intervention.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of stabilisation and safe transfer of critically unwell pregnant and postpartum patients across pre-hospital and in-hospital settings.
  • Integrate up-to-date national guidance and evidence-based approaches into the management of common maternal critical care presentations, including cardiovascular complications, hypertensive disorders, and acute medical emergencies in pregnancy.
  • Analyse the role of multidisciplinary teamworking and system-based approaches, including outreach services, maternal medicine networks, and care bundles, in optimising maternal outcomes.
  • Apply key principles of ongoing maternal care following critical illness, including medication safety, breastfeeding considerations, and longer-term health implications
