Dr Paul Dean is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, where he has practised as a consultant intensivist since 2009. He is recognised nationally for his leadership in critical care standards, service development, and multidisciplinary workforce advancement.
Paul is the Honorary Treasurer of the Intensive Care Society and serves as Co‑Editor‑in‑Chief of GPICS v3, the UK’s definitive standard for the provision of intensive care services. He also holds a senior regional role as Medical Lead for the Lancashire & South Cumbria Critical Care Network, supporting system‑wide quality improvement, resilience planning, and service coordination.
His clinical background spans trauma, sepsis, retrieval medicine, and patient safety, and he has contributed extensively to national guidance, governance frameworks, and professional standards across the critical care community.
Paul brings to this session a combination of front‑line clinical expertise and national standards leadership, shaping how GPICS v3 will influence the future of UK intensive care.

Shondipon is a Consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Intensive Care Society's Honorary Secretary. He is also the Society's Learning Division Chair leading the education and ultrasound programme across the UK.

Chief Executive, Intensive Care Society
Sandy began her career as a radiographer, which led to her undertaking a PhD in Child Health. Making the decision to move away from a clinical setting, Sandy gained a wealth of experience operating at a senior management level, leading strategy and change programmes for non profit organisations and membership bodies particularly those involved in professional education, training, standards, research and international development. Sandy joined the Society in 2017.
ICS Immediate Past President and Consultant Intensivist and Anaesthetist
Steve Mathieu is the Immediate Past President of the Intensive Care Society.
He is a Consultant in Critical Care at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and the Divisional Director for Clinical Delivery (Critical Care, Anaesthetics, Theatres, Radiology, Pharmacy, Therapies, Blood Sciences and Pathology). He was previously the Clinical Director of Critical Care when the ICU was rated outstanding in all domains by the CQC.
His previous roles for the Society include Congress Director for State of the Art (SOA), Honorary Treasurer and Council Member.
He has interests in patient and staff experience, workforce and operational strategy as well as medical education and information technology. He is a co-founder and senior editor for The Bottom Line and set up and maintains the Portsmouth ICU website.

Stephen is a Consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Trust and former Honorary Secretary of the Society before becoming President.
