Directors of Research

The Intensive Care Society is appointing a new cohort of Directors of Research to lead delivery of its Research Strategy from 2026 onwards. 

The Society’s role is to provide leadership, coordination and strategic direction for the wider intensive care research community. Directors will each lead an agreed portfolio and will work collectively to strengthen national networks, facilitate collaboration, support high-quality research and ensure that patient and family priorities inform research activity. 

The portfolios 

Director, Organ Dysfunction and Failure 
Organ support, shock states, coagulopathy and critical illness-associated organ dysfunction. 

Director, Infection and Inflammation 
Sepsis, host response, antimicrobial therapies, immune modulation and infection-related critical illness. 

Director(s), Recovery and Long-Term Outcomes 
Rehabilitation, survivorship, patient and family outcomes, and quality of life following critical illness. 

Director, Data and Methodology 
Cross-cutting leadership of research infrastructure, registries and linked data, informatics, study and trial design, qualitative and quantitative methodology, and analytical support. 

What you will do 
  • Lead an agreed portfolio, define priorities and deliver annual objectives. 

  • Help refine and implement the Society’s Research Strategy. 

  • Support grant and award programmes, strategic partnerships and fair review processes. 

  • Strengthen research capability and networks across professions, career stages and regions. 

  • Contribute to proportionate research endorsement and dissemination. 

  • Connect research with implementation, guidance, education and policy. 

  • Represent the Society with funders, research networks and partner organisations. 

Who we are looking for 

Applicants should bring substantial research leadership, methodological expertise, funded research experience or evidence of applied research impact, together with expertise relevant to at least one portfolio. They should be collaborative, inclusive and committed to improving outcomes for patients and families. 

Applications are welcomed from nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists, doctors, psychologists, clinical academics, methodologists, data scientists, scientists and applied or non-clinical researchers. We are seeking professional and geographical breadth across the cohort. 

Term and commitment 
  • Three-year appointment. 

  • Voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed. 

  • Approximately two days per quarter, including quarterly Director Group and Council meetings, with additional time during grant rounds and agreed portfolio activity.
