Developing our services around patients needs and experiences is essential. This session will share insights into an ICU stay directly from the bedspace and consider ways in which we can adapt our approach to improve patient experience and longer-term consequences of a ICU stay.

Chair: Zoe Van Willigen
Zoe van Willigen is a Critical Care Physiotherapist with over 20 years’ experience in the speciality. She has led the Early Mobilisation Project on intensive care (ICU) in Southampton since 2012, which is estimated to have saved her NHS trust over £2.5million. Zoe has conducted and published research into the family and patient experience of rehabilitation on ICU, leading to a number of pilot projects to address the provision of services throughout the ICU recovery pathway. Zoe is chair of the Thames Valley and Wessex Critical Care Network’s rehabilitation group and is also employed by the ICUsteps charity as a rehabilitation consultant to lead ICUsteps Active national online rehabilitation classes for former ICU patients. Zoe holds one of only 10 physiotherapy professional advisory group seats for the Intensive Care Society and was also on the specialist advisory group for the recent NCEPOD trial into rehabilitation after critical illness.
Lucy Gosnell is a Senior Sister in Critical Care with 20 years of experience in intensive care nursing. She is also the Lead Nurse for Patient Rehabilitation and Follow-Up, with a strong commitment to improving patient recovery and long-term outcomes following critical illness.
She has a particular interest in the humanisation of intensive care and has led initiatives focused on improving the experiences of patients and families within the ICU environment. As project lead, she successfully guided her organisation to achieve accreditation in Humanisation and Good Practices from HU-CI — the first accreditation of its kind awarded in the UK.
