When Treatment Becomes the Barrier: Iatrogenic Withdrawal in Rehabilitation After Critical Illness

8am – 9am BST, 2 July 2026 ‐ 1 hour

Hall 5

This session explores iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome (IWS) as an often under-recognised barrier to recovery following critical illness. It will cover key concepts, emerging evidence, and how withdrawal presents across the patient pathway—from ICU to rehabilitation—along with practical strategies to support recognition and improve patient engagement and outcomes.

Chair: David Sapsford

Presentations:

Learning objectives:

  1. Define iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome in the ICU
  2. Epidemiology and risk factors
  3. Emerging evidence for IWS

Learning objectives:

  1. Recognise how iatrogenic withdrawal presents during post-ICU rehabilitation and how it impacts patient engagement
  2. Consider other causes of impaired recovery, including delirium, pain, and psychological sequelae of critical illness
  3. Apply practical strategies to optimise rehabilitation outcomes
