The Cauldron returns to SOA26 with a forward-looking and thought-provoking session led by the Intensive Care Society Resident Doctors Professional Advisory Group. Marking the Society's Congress 25th anniversary, this year’s theme—Exploring Big Questions and Bold Solutions in Intensive Care—invites us to reimagine the future of the specialty.

Focusing on the year 2050, the session challenges contributors to think beyond current practice and explore how intensive care medicine might evolve over the next 25 years. From technological innovation and advances in biomedical science to shifts in workforce models, ethics, and patient expectations, the discussion will span a wide range of perspectives and possibilities.

Selected high-scoring abstracts will be presented by their authors, followed by discussion and questions from a judging panel. The session aims to showcase innovative thinking, creative solutions, and fresh insights that push the boundaries of conventional practice.

The winning submission will be announced during the SOA26 Closing Plenary on Thursday 2 July 2026.
